FRUIT
Don’t miss out on flavoursome plums, bursting with colour and flavour. Autumn Giant, Angelino, Tegan Blue, Queen Garnet and October Sun, are all in season. For something new, try Swan Hill grown Turtle plums. look for the greenish gold skin and golden fleshed, they are crisp, juicy and super sweet. All plums are selling for $4-$15 a kilo, depending on variety. Team plums with berries or new season apples and whip up a tasty baked plum crumble.
Naturally sweet, juicy and fun to eat, grapes are an autumn favourite. Add a bunch of grapes to kid’s lunch boxes, serve grapes with sweet and savoury salads or serve grapes with cheese. Seasonal favourites include, Autumn Crisp, Sweet Celebration, Sultana, Black Muscat, Candy Crush, Saphire, Sweet Globe and Black Beauty – we are spoiled for choice. Depending on variety grapes are $4-$20 a kilo.
Australia grown Valencia oranges are sweet and juicy. You will notice that the skin on the Valencia orange at this time of year has a green tinge; this simply means the fruit is sun ripened and extra sweet. Expect to pay $2.50-$6 a kilo. 3 kilo net bags are $5-$7 a kilo.
Delicious, delicate and sweet eating figs are still available although recent weather has reduced the shelf life so we recommend eating them soon after purchasing for maximum enjoyment. Visit your local greengrocer for the best figs retailing at 50c-$3 each, depending on quality and size.
We are seeing soon price reductions of bananas with late week specials likely. Banana prices are ranging from $2.50-$5 a kilo.
Peaking in autumn, vivid-green limes add zing to drinks, marinades, sauces and salad. Limes are in season and great value at 50¢-$1 each depending on size or $4-$7 a kilo. Roll a lime in the palms of your hands for 30 seconds before juicing to maximise the juice yield. Buy in bulk to save.
Flavoursome Williams’ and Packham pears are a top buy at $3-$6 a kilo. Roasted pears are a superb accompaniment to roast pork and combine deliciously with parsnips. Remember that pears continue to ripen are harvesting so select firm, mature pears and ripen at room temperature. If poaching or roasting pears, use firm pears for the best result.
Shepard avocados are a pear-shaped variety with a smooth green skin and a golden buttery flesh which does not turn brown when cut. With an average size 200g-320g they are in season from late February to May and good value at $1.50-$3 each, depending on size. Hass avocados are also still a good alternative.
Autumn heralds the arrival of new season custard apples. Sweet with a creamy texture, custard apples are delicious for breakfast served with vanilla yoghurt, passionfruit and toasted coconut. Custard apples are $10-$16 a kilo.
New season sweet persimmons have started. This non astringent persimmon can be eaten crisp and firm. Select smooth, glossy, bright-coloured orange fruit. Like an apple, sweet persimmon is eaten firm and crisp. It does not soften with ripening and is non astringent in taste. Sweet persimmons are $12-25 a kilo, depending on size and quality.
VEGETABLES
Machine harvested green beans prices are a thrifty buy at $4-$6 a kilo this week. Beans are very perishable and need to be used within 2-3 days of purchasing. For a quick serving idea toss trimmed beans in garlic, fresh herbs and olive oil and microwave.
Werribee grown fennel bulbs are a quality buy at $2-$2.50 a head. Fennel’s delicate aniseed flavour is a scrumptious addition to risotto, pasta dishes and salads; it complements lamb, pork, mussels, fish and prawns.
Take a fresh look at potatoes. This versatile vegetable is nourishing and hearty and there are so many varieties to choose from. Boiled, mashed or roasted potatoes are easy to prepare. South Australian washed, Brushed and Red skinned potatoes are a good all-purpose potato and are 5 Kilo bag for $6-$10.
Red capsicums are indispensable in the kitchen as their sweet flavour and vibrant colour are idea for using is stir-fries, salad and casseroles. Enjoy them barbecued or cut in half, stuffed and baked. Field grown red capsicums are $4-$7 a kilo and premium quality glasshouse capsicums are $8-$10 a kilo
Kale is packed full of nutrients with just one cup providing about 100% of your daily requirements of vitamins A, C & K. Use kale in similar way to English spinach. Kale is selling for $2- $3 a bunch.
Firm, papery-skinned brown onions are full of flavour. Perfect for a bowl of nourishing French onion soup or add them to a stir-fry, roast or casserole. Brown onions are $2-$4 a kilo, depending on size.
Versatile and mild flavoured zucchinis are perfect for adding to a frittata, rissoles and vegetable patties or add tender slices to pasta dishes. Zucchinis are 43-$7 a kilo, depending on size.
For good value be sure to snap up a whole pumpkin. Cheaper when purchased whole, pumpkins are smooth creamy flesh is loaded with vitamins A & C and fibre. Add diced pumpkin to curries or roast large wedges with the skin on to really intensify the flavour. Add cooked pumpkin to a salad, couscous or pasta dish. Whole pumpkins are selling for around $1.50-$3 a kilo.
Select compact Brussels sprouts that are smaller in size than a ping-pong ball. Their leaves should be firm, bright green and fresh looking without signs of yellowing. Brussels sprouts are a tasty buy at $7-$10 a kilo.
FLOWERS
This week’s floral selection offers a wonderful variety of seasonal blooms. Among the pick of the bunch are Oriental lilies, dahlia, asters and Easter daisies, alongside iris and bird of paradise. You’ll also find fragrant tuberoses, late season hydrangea, water lilies and Australian flowering gum, as well as distinctive varieties such as pineapple lily, Siam tulips, sedum and sunflowers.
Classic favourites including rose, tulips, chrysanthemums, carnations and gerberas sit alongside hanging amaranth, bouvardia, lotus pod and proteas. Rounding out the selection are lisianthus, celosia, gladioli, chrysanthemums and Singapore orchards, making it a great week to visit your local florist in store or order flowers to brighten your home or share with someone special.
